This displaced water flows out through the overflow spout into the container on the left pan.According to Archimedes' principle,the brass weight experiences an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the displaced water. By Newton's third law,the weight exerts an equal and opposite downward force on the water,which is transmitted to the right pan.However,the right pan loses the weight of the displaced water (which flowed out),but gains the downward force exerted by the weight on the water. Since the weight of the displaced water is exactly equal to the buoyant force,the net change in weight on the right pan is zero.Meanwhile,the left pan gains the weight of the displaced water that flowed into it.Therefore,the total weight on the left pan increases,causing the left side of the balance to tip down.
